Get your soil ready for spring! The Kane County Farm Bureau offers three soil tests to members and non-members. The Basic Test (1) measures soil pH, phosphorus & potassium with fertility recommendations. The Lawn/Garden Test (4) includes the Basic Test, checks the percentage of organic matter and offers recommendations on amount & timing of fertilizer. The Lawn/Garden Plus Test (3) is the Lawn/Garden Test and also measures micronutrients iron, zinc, manganese, copper, sulfur and boron. The prices of the tests vary.

For each soil test to be effective, collect 5 samples of the soil to be tested by cutting a one-inch hole about 6 inches deep for each sample. Combine the samples to equal at least one cup of soil. Do not include any dead or live plant material in the sample. Then fill out a soil test form, available at the Kane County Farm Bureau office. Bring the form and the sample to the Kane County Farm Bureau, 2N710 Randall Road, St. Charles during the office hours of 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. The results will be mailed directly to you within 7 to 14 business days. For more information or answers to your questions, please call the Kane County Farm Bureau, (630) 584-8660.
